Younghee is an actor, director, writer and educator who works professionally in a broad range of settings, including adult and children’s theatre, community arts, film, and television. She has worked across South Korea, Australia, America, Japan, Germany, and China and specialises in bilingual theatre, transcultural performance and community arts.

Themes of place, space and surroundings are repeatedly explored, fuelled by curiosity, itchy feet and a fear of complacency.

10 years in the making.

Nathan Stoneham

I wrote the first draft of The Footprint on an airplane between Australia and Korea in 2012. For a few years, only when flying, I’d open up the document and tinker.

The story held on, not wanting to be forgotten.

Years later, I saw Brian’s paintings of the sea on instagram, and sent a message to see if he’d be interested in illustrating a children’s picture book about a pair of shoes that are blamed for everything, but that are capable of so much in the right hands…. or on the right feet.

After over a decade of collaborating on bilingual theatre and community arts projects together, I invited my friend Younghee to collaborate on the story, and write a Korean version. Through this process, the text, themes, and characters developed and distilled as languages and perspectives interweaved.

Brian drew and painted all through the COVID lockdowns. His illustrations influenced the story too, with the Korean and English text responding to his breathtaking work.

In 2022, we fine-tuned all the book’s elements and finally self-published The Footprint, printing a small batch of books, available now.

It has been one very, slow step.

We hope it leaves an imprint on you, and the children in your life.
